Bank Mitra and CSP: How to Become a BC Agent, Cost and Income
Bank Mitra and CSP explained: what a BC agent does, eligibility, IIBF exam, how to apply, setup cost, commission income, fake CSP scams and a zero-cost alternative.
A Bank Mitra is a local agent who offers basic banking, like cash deposit, cash withdrawal and account opening, from a small outlet called a Customer Service Point (CSP) on behalf of a bank. To become one, you usually need to be 18 or older, at least 10th or 12th pass, run a small shop with a computer, clear the IIBF BC exam, and apply through a bank, a corporate BC company or the CSC portal.
If you already run a CSC centre, our guide on CSC extra income is a good place to start. Below are the 7 steps to become a Bank Mitra, with the real setup cost, how commission works, and how to avoid fake CSP websites. Where the job has trade-offs, like cash risk and slow commission, we say so plainly.

| Question | Short answer |
|---|---|
| What is a CSP? | A small outlet that offers basic banking for a bank |
| Who runs it? | A Bank Mitra, also called a BC agent |
| Started by | RBI's Business Correspondent model, 2006 |
| Minimum age | 18 years (some banks ask for 21) |
| Education | 10th or 12th pass, depends on bank |
| Exam | IIBF BC/BF certificate, required by most banks |
| Setup cost | About ₹50,000 to ₹1.5 lakh |
| Income | Commission per transaction, no fixed salary |
Cost and income figures in this guide are broad planning ranges. Each bank and corporate BC sets its own rules, so confirm with the bank before you spend money.
How this guide is ordered: the steps follow the real sequence a new Bank Mitra goes through, from checking eligibility to earning the first commission.
1. Check Your Eligibility
Age: 18+ (some banks 21+) | Education: 10th or 12th pass | Must have: local address, clean record, basic computer skills
Most banks accept a Bank Mitra who is an adult resident of the area, has passed school, has no criminal record and can use a computer. Trust matters here. Banks prefer local people because customers trust someone they know, and the CSP must serve a specific village or ward.
How to check if you qualify:
- Confirm your age and education certificate.
- Make sure you live in or near the area the CSP will serve.
- Check that you can get police verification if asked.
- Practise basic computer work like forms and printing.
2. Pick Your Route: Corporate BC, CSC or Bank Branch
Route 1: corporate BC company | Route 2: CSC portal | Route 3: bank branch
You can become a Bank Mitra through one of three routes. Most people join through a corporate BC company that works with a partner bank. Existing CSC (Jan Seva Kendra) owners can apply through their CSC login. In some areas, the bank branch itself looks for agents.
| Route | Best for | How it works |
|---|---|---|
| Corporate BC company | Most people | The company signs you up for a partner bank and gives the software |
| CSC portal | Existing CSC owners | Apply for banking services through your CSC login |
| Bank branch | Areas where the bank needs agents | Ask the nearest branch or regional office |
How to choose your route:
- Ask your nearest bank branch which banks need a CSP in your area.
- If you run a CSC, check the banking section in your CSC portal.
- Otherwise, contact a well-known corporate BC company that partners with that bank.
- Get every promise in writing. Then pay, never before.
3. Arrange Your Shop and Equipment
Space: 100 to 200 sq ft | Equipment: computer, printer, fingerprint device, internet | Cash: your own float for withdrawals
A CSP needs a small shop on a busy road, basic equipment and your own cash to pay out withdrawals. The cash float is the part most people forget. It matters a lot: when a customer withdraws ₹5,000, you pay from your drawer and the bank credits your account.
| Item | Indicative cost |
|---|---|
| Computer or laptop | ₹25,000 to ₹40,000 |
| Fingerprint device | ₹2,500 to ₹4,000 |
| Printer | ₹5,000 to ₹10,000 |
| Internet, furniture, signboard | ₹5,000 to ₹15,000 |
| Security deposit (if asked) | Varies by bank and company |
| Cash float for withdrawals | ₹20,000 to ₹1 lakh |
How to set up the CSP:
- Rent or use a small shop with good footfall.
- Buy a computer, printer and a registered fingerprint device.
- Get a stable internet connection.
- Keep enough cash ready for the first weeks.
4. Apply and Submit Your Documents
Documents: Aadhaar, PAN, education certificate, photos, shop address proof | Also: bank details for commission
Fill the application with the bank or corporate BC and attach your documents. Every account you later open must follow proper KYC, so it helps to know the basics; our guide on KYC full form and process explains what banks check.
How to apply:
- Fill the application form with personal and shop details.
- Attach Aadhaar, PAN, education certificate and photos.
- Add address proof of the shop.
- Share the bank account where you want commission paid.
5. Clear Verification and Sign the Agreement
Checks: police verification, shop inspection | Agreement: with the bank or corporate BC | Payment: only against an official receipt
The bank or corporate BC will verify you and inspect your shop before signing an agreement. Don't skip this. If a security deposit is asked, pay it only to the company's official account and always take a proper receipt.
How to finish this step:
- Complete police verification if asked.
- Allow the shop inspection.
- Read the agreement, especially commission rates and payment dates.
- Sign and collect your agent ID and software login.
6. Pass the IIBF BC Exam
Exam: IIBF Certificate Examination for Business Correspondents / Business Facilitators | When: usually within a set time after joining
Most banks require Bank Mitras to pass the IIBF certificate exam for Business Correspondents (IIBF exam rules, iibf.org.in). The exam covers basic banking, KYC, customer service and the rules a BC must follow. Your bank or corporate BC will tell you the deadline and how to register.
How to prepare for the IIBF BC exam:
- Ask your corporate BC for the registration link and deadline.
- Study the basics of savings accounts, KYC and government schemes.
- Take practice tests.
- Give the exam and share the certificate with your bank.
7. Start Your CSP and Earn Commission
Pay: commission per transaction and per account | Paid: usually monthly via the corporate BC | Salary: none
A Bank Mitra earns commission. Not a salary. You get a small amount for each cash deposit, withdrawal, AEPS transaction, new account and scheme enrolment. So footfall is everything. Income depends almost fully on how many customers walk in.
| Income source | How it is paid |
|---|---|
| Cash deposit and withdrawal | Small commission per transaction, often a percentage with a cap |
| AEPS withdrawal | Commission per transaction |
| New savings account | Fixed amount per account |
| Scheme enrolment (PMJJBY, PMSBY, APY) | Fixed amount per enrolment |
| CSP location | Indicative monthly income |
|---|---|
| Quiet location, few customers | Under ₹5,000 |
| Average village market | ₹8,000 to ₹15,000 |
| Busy market, high footfall | ₹20,000 to ₹30,000 or more |
How to grow your CSP income:
- Open a zero balance savings account for every family in your area that doesn't have one.
- Enrol eligible customers in PMJJBY, PMSBY and Atal Pension Yojana.
- Keep enough cash so customers never get turned away.
- Add extra services that your walk-in customers need.
What Is a Bank Mitra, CSP and BC Agent?
A Bank Mitra, a BC agent and a CSP operator are the same job. RBI allowed banks to appoint Business Correspondents in 2006 (RBI Business Correspondent guidelines, January 2006) so that people in villages and small towns could bank without going to a branch.
| Term | Meaning |
|---|---|
| Business Correspondent (BC) | A person or company a bank appoints to offer banking on its behalf |
| BC agent / Bank Mitra | The individual who serves customers |
| CSP (Customer Service Point) | The outlet or kiosk where the Bank Mitra works |
| Corporate BC (CBC) | A company that manages many BC agents |
| Mini bank / kiosk banking | Local names for a CSP |
What services does a CSP offer?
A CSP offers everyday banking: opening savings and Jan Dhan accounts, cash deposit and withdrawal, Aadhaar (AEPS) withdrawal by fingerprint, balance enquiry, money transfer, and enrolment in PMJJBY, PMSBY and Atal Pension Yojana. Some banks also allow small recurring deposits and loan repayment collection.
Bank Mitra salary: what you really earn
There's no Bank Mitra salary. Searches for "bank mitra salary" are really about commission income, which ranges from under ₹5,000 to ₹30,000 or more a month depending on footfall, as shown in step 7.
SBI CSP apply online: how to avoid fake websites
Fake "SBI CSP apply online" and "bank mitra registration" websites are a common scam. Be careful. They promise a CSP allotment and ask for a registration or security fee to a personal account or UPI ID. A real bank or corporate BC verifies you, inspects your shop and gives receipts for any official payment. Report fraud on the national cyber crime portal at cybercrime.gov.in or by calling 1930.

Important Safety Tips
- Never pay to a personal account: banks don't appoint CSPs through random websites or UPI IDs.
- Verify at the branch: walk into the bank's nearest branch and confirm any CSP offer.
- Keep cash safe: use a locker, count cash twice and close accounts daily.
- Read the agreement: check commission rates, payment dates and exit terms before you sign.
- Protect customer data: never keep copies of customers' Aadhaar or PINs.
Is a CSP Right for You?
- Have a shop, savings and steady footfall? A CSP can be good local income.
- Already run a CSC centre? Add Bank Mitra services through your CSC login.
- Do not want to handle cash or invest ₹50,000 or more? Look at zero investment business ideas that need no shop.
- Want more products than one bank offers? Add a GroMo partner account next to your CSP.

A CSP is steady, respected local work. It isn't easy money, though. It needs money upfront, daily cash handling and high footfall to pay well. Check the bank, the corporate BC and the agreement carefully, and never pay anyone outside official channels.
Many CSP owners also add GroMo to their counter. GroMo is a free app where partners help customers apply for credit cards, loans and bank accounts from many banks, with no shop and no cash. Walk-in customers often need a card or a loan that the CSP can't offer. The IDFC FIRST Bank Saving Account pays GroMo partners ₹600 per successful account (GroMo catalogue, retrieved 2026-10-14).
The SBI Credit Card pays GroMo partners ₹2,000 per approved card (GroMo catalogue, retrieved 2026-10-14).
